Highly regarded for his contribution to film edits, his 1950s pieces transcended its time through its method. If a painter only uses the tools of its medium he can never transcend it.
“The greatest living magician” according to film maker Kenneth Anger; Smith combined newspaper snippets, everyday film, audio clips, and pages from “magic and illusionism.” As a magician grabs tricks from his bag, Smith’s audio repertoire stood pieces necessary to mix a whole new video.
